Birth asphyxia is characterized by hypoxemia (decreased PaCO2), hypercarbia (increased PaCO2), and acidosis (lowered pH). Etiology . Maternal causes include amnionitis, anemia, diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, drugs, and infection. Uterine causes include prolonged labor and abnormal fetal presentations.
