The Stamp Act was an act passed by Parliament that required that all materials printed in the colonies be printed on paper embossed with an official revenue stamp. These printed materials included magazines, newsletters, legal documents and newspapers.

The Stamp Act helped bring the colonists together. Representatives from nine colonies held a meeting to write up some of their complaints against the British government. They asked the government to repeal, or take back, the law. In addition, merchants in the colonies agreed not to import goods from Britain.

The Stamp Act of 1765 March 4, 2020 “Savages may indeed be a formidable enemy to your raw American militia; but upon the king’s regular and disciplined troops, Sir, it is impossible they should make an impression.” The British Parliament passed the law called the Stamp Act in 1765. The act said that people in the American colonies had to use a stamp on newspapers and legal documents. The colonists had to buy the stamp from the British government. The colonists protested the tax.
Due to the Stamp Act the colonist organized the Stamp Act Congress which met in New York City in October of 1765. Twenty seven delegates from nine of the colonies attended the Stamp Act Congress. Over 10 years later four of these men would sign the Declaration of Independence. In May of 1765, the news of the impending Stamp Act reached Boston. Starting November 1, 1765, all printed documents would be required by law to carry a stamp.
