How America Can Use China's A2/AD Military Strategy Against Them. Threatening fearful consequences could deter Beijing from aggression tomorrow morning, and the next.
The conce pt known as Air-Sea Battle remains one of the most significant of these approaches, and even as it continues to evolve, the US military must continue to develop understanding of threats abroad to describe and direct efficient and effective ways to mitigate those threats. Amitai Etzioni of the Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies has suggested that AirSea Battle is an escalatory military posture that entails restructuring United States military forces and ordering additional weapons systems, and that AirSea Battle could “lead to an arms race with China, which could culminate in a nuclear war.” Anti-access and area denial — best known by its shorthand A2/AD — has crossed the buzzword threshold. It’s a quite impressive feat for such a distinctively non-user friendly and technical concept, which alludes to that family of military capabilities used to prevent or constrain the deployment of opposing forces into a given theater of operations and reduce their freedom of maneuver once while avoiding military conflict. There is continual discussion at all military levels about how to combat A2/AD and how the U.S. can win a conflict against China.
Russian A2AD is a myth. The western community loves talking about Russian A2AD, those defensive bubbles NATO would have to pop to have a chance at winning a war against Russia. We can’t help but talk about A2AD when we talk about the S-300, S-400 and S-500 systems… And yet, A2AD does not appear anywhere in Russian military papers or China is steaming ahead with its military modernisation program, which is based on the informationisation (that is, developing an integrated joint warfare capability) of the PLA, while continuing to extend its ability to counter intervention through better A2AD. WASHINGTON, D.C. — As Pentagon terms-of-the-moment go, Anti-Access-Area Denial has been on the forefront of strategic conversation across the services and military academia for more than 15 years.

A2AD is not a revolution in military affairs, it does inform the expected evolution of warfare’s character: where feasible, conventional warfare will include A2AD approaches. Without a deeper shared understanding of the A2AD concept, the military faces significant difficulty overcoming the threat it …
